Shanghai, April 3 (Xinhua) -- It was reported on the 3rd that the joint team of Zhou Peng and Bao Wenzhong from Fudan University has broken through the bottleneck of two-dimensional semiconductor electronics integration and successfully developed the world's first 32-bit RISC-V architecture microprocessor based on two-dimensional semiconductor materials, "Wuji".


Under the control of 32-bit input instructions, "Wuji" can perform addition and subtraction operations between up to 4.2 billion data points, support GB level data storage and access, and program writing up to 1 billion simplified instruction sets.


On the night of April 2, 2025 Beijing time, the relevant results were published in the internationally renowned journal Nature. It is reported that after more than ten years of research and development by the international academic and industrial communities, scientists have mastered wafer level two-dimensional material growth technology and successfully manufactured high-performance basic devices with only a few hundred atomic lengths and several atomic thicknesses. However, assembling these "atomic level precision components" into a complete integrated circuit system has always been plagued by the problem of synergistic yield control between process accuracy and scale uniformity. In the past, the highest integration level was only at the level of a few hundred transistors, and it never crossed the technical threshold of functional microprocessors.


After five years of technological research and iteration, the joint team of Zhou Peng and Bao Wenzhong from Fudan University has achieved breakthrough results: the 32-bit RISC-V architecture microprocessor "WuJI" has been successfully launched. This processor has achieved the largest scale verification record of two-dimensional logic function internationally (integrating 5900 transistors) through independent innovation of characteristic integration technology and open source simplified instruction set computing architecture (RISC-V), completing the independent research and development of the entire chain from materials to architecture to chip fabrication.


We achieve nanometer level power consumption using micrometer level processes. And extremely low-power CPUs can help artificial intelligence be applied more widely. ”Zhou Peng said. In these two-dimensional semiconductor integration processes, about 70% of the processes can directly use mature silicon-based production line technologies, and the core two-dimensional characteristic processes have also been built with more than 20 process invention patents, combined with an independent technology system of specialized process equipment, paving the way for future industrialization.


It is understood that the process flow of "Wuji" is very complex, and parameter settings are difficult to complete manually. After introducing machine learning AI empowerment, the parameter optimization window can be quickly determined to improve transistor yield. The optimization level of its integrated process and the results of large-scale circuit verification have both reached the international best level of the same period.


It is reported that in terms of technological breakthroughs, the team is committed to further improving the performance and integration of two-dimensional electronic devices, breaking through the current bottleneck of transistor integration, and making them more competitive in more application scenarios.


In the process of industrialization, the team will strengthen the integration with existing silicon-based production line technology and promote the industrial application of core two-dimensional characteristic processes. By collaborating with relevant enterprises and institutions, we aim to accelerate the transformation of two-dimensional semiconductor electronic devices from the laboratory to the market, enabling them to quickly play a role in practical products and meet market demand.
